The B10 - 97 cruise was carried out by Marine Research Institute (MRI) on the RV Bjarni Sæmundsson with the following aims:
The RV Bjarni Sæmundsson left Reykjavik harbor at 2000 hours on the 8th of September 1997 for the B10 - 97 cruise. After a short detour to the outer harbor for acoustic/vibration measurements the vessel proceeded with the Faxaflói standard hydrographic section deploying two satellite tracked drifters at station 353 and 355. After station 357 a detour was made to 63°00'N 26° 00'W where the third drifter was deployed. The section was completed at 1130 hours GMT on the 10th Sept.
A gale warning in the Denmark Strait and along the west coast of Iceland called for a change in plans so the ship headed for the outermost end of the Látrabjarg section near the island of South Aputiteq of the Greenland coast. Greenland territorial waters were entered at 2146 GMT and reported to the Greenland Kommando.
At 1050 GMT on the 11th pack ice was encountered 16 NM off the coast of Greenland at approximately 67°15´N 32° 24W in fine weather. CTD station no. 361 was taken at the ice edge and the ship then proceeded east along the Ljátrabjarg section taking CTD stations at regular intervals. At 0944 GMT on the 12th a 150 Khz ADCP current meter was recovered at 66° 04´N 27° 04´.8W and at 1125 GMT a 75 Khz ADCP current meter was deployed at 66°04´.75N 27°05W at 650 meters depth. The section was finished at 1950 hours and course set for station 7 on the Kögur section.
At 0635 on the 13th the ship came to the ice edge at 67° 30'N 24° 39´W and continued to thread its way westward in calm weather and intermittent fog patches. Both the mooring sites were under ice. It soon became clear that the western part of the standard section was also under ice so it was decided to pivot the western half to the south from station kg6 (392). At 1806 GMT station 384 was occupied 25 NM south of the usual section and course set east for station kg6. At dawn on the 14th ice condition had improved a little and at 1215 GMT mooring IS9 - 96 was recovered and at 1544 GMT IS9 - 97 was deployed in its place. CTD station work then continued until the section was completed at 1319 GMT on the 15th.
From Kögur the course was set for the 1st station on the Langanes NE section where station 398 was taken at 1100 GMT at 66° 37´N 14° 16´W on the 16th. The 6th and last station of the section was finished at 0541 GMT on the 17th and course set for the last ESOP-2 station on the Siglunes section at 68° 00'N 18° 50'W after which at 2142 GMT the ship headed again for the IS6 - 96 mooring site for a last attempt at recovery. At 0640 GMT scattered ice was found at 68° 06.4N 25° 47'.5W increasing as the ship proceeded WSW along the ice edge. At 1339 GMT further attempts to recover the mooring were abandoned and course set for Reykjavik where the vessel arrived at 1630 GMT on the 19th having sailed 2256 NM.
The hydrographic work was carried out with two independent CTD-water sampling units both equipped with Seabird Inc. SBE 911plus CTD´s. The first unit, a MRI made rosette equipped with 12 modified Hydro-Bios 1.7 liter water bottles and a General Oceanics underwater unit, was used for all standard CTD stations. The other unit (UNIT B) comprised of SBE 32 rosette equipped with 12 Go-Flo 8 liter water samplers and was used for chemical sampling on ESOP-2 stations. A Sea-Tec transmissometer was attached to the MRI unit. Both units were equipped with newly calibrated temperature and conductivity sensors and water samples were collected at deepest sampling level on all stations for calibration purposes.

Samples for oxygen measurements were collected at 12 stations in about 60 ml bottles, and Winkler reagents added. Samples were then placed in a dark cold storage until the time of analysis. Oxygen concentration was determined using a modified Winkler method.
Samples for nutrient analysis, nitrate, phosphate and silicate, were collected on 12 stations, in 250 ml polyethylene bottles. Samples from one station was frozen right after collection for preservation, where as the rest were refrigerated.
Samples for pCO2 and total carbonate were collected on 11 and 12 stations re-spectively in 500 and 250 ml bottles, preserved with Mercury chloride and placed in cold storage.
Samples for delta Carbon -13 were collected from the surface at 10 stations and a full profile was collected from 1 station. The samples were preserved with Mercury chloride.
Samples for Sulfur hexafluoride were collected at 11 stations in 500 ml bottles supplied by Gothenburg University and placed in cold storage.
Samples for Iodine-129 were collected at 4 stations in 1 liter polyethylene bottles supplied by Centre de Spectrometrie Nucleaire et de Specrometrie de Masse.
In May1996 the MRI deployed a 150 Khz ADCP current profiler in the Denmark Strait as part of the Nordic Woce ADCP program. It was recovered in September and deployed again on the 1st of November the same year.
At 0944 hours GMT on the 12th the ADCP current profiler was recovered at 66° 04´N 27° 04´.8W and at 1125 GMT a 75 Khz ADCP current meter was deployed in its place at 66° 04´.75N 27°05W water depth 650 meter.
Since 1988 the MRI has maintained two current meter moorings at approximate
positions:
IS6: 68° 09'N 25° 12'W Depth 800 meter
IS9: 67° 56'N 24° 40'W Depth 1415 meter
These moorings were first as part of the Greenland Sea Program and later the Nordic Woce Program. Ice conditions have some times caused difficulties in servicing the moorings for example both the moorings were lost in 1993 due to ice covering the mooring sites. This year it was not possible to recover mooring IS6 - 96 due to ice.
On the 14th at 1215 GMT the IS9 - 96 mooring was recovered with 3 current meters:
Aanderaa RCM4 S/N 7332 at 80 m depth
Aanderaa RCM7 S/N 8285 at 500 m depth
Aanderaa RCM7 S/N 6934 at 1365 m depth
The mooring was deployed again the same day at 1544 GMT in position 67° 56'.214N
24° 40'.402 depth 1414 m with 3 current meters:
Aanderaa RCM4 S/N 11987 at 80 m depth
Aanderaa RCM7 S/N 172 at 500 m depth
Aanderaa RCM7 S/N 12317 at 1365 m depth
All the goals of the cruise were achieved (see list of CTD stations and cruise track except the recovery and deployment of mooring IS - 96 which was hindered by ice.
Little can be said about the results of most of the sampling since most of the analyses will be performed on shore after the cruise.
Preliminary inspection of the CTD data on the other hand show, both in the TS -
diagrams from the Látrabjarg and Kögur sections as well as in the salinity
and temperature sections (Fig. 5, 6, 7, 8), an increase both in salinity as well as temperature
compared with recent years indicating favorable inflow of Atlantic water into the North
Icelandic coastal area. The same is true for the Faxaflói section (Fig.
3 and Fig. 4). The fresh water flow
in the East Greenland Current on the other hand was also quite pronounced.
